APPLE’S ADVANCED DATA PROTECTION ROLLBACK: WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOUR PRIVACY & SECURITY

Apple has recently decided to remove its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) feature for UK customers. This change has raised significant concerns about data privacy and security, especially amongst high-profile individuals. We spoke to Harry Gough, a cyber security expert and Chief Operating Officer of our partners coc00n, to find out what you need to know.

What is ADP
Security and privacy have been major selling points for Apple and many customers have long relied on the in-built protections they offer. The ADP tool is an opt-in additional service that offers end-to-end encryption for data stored in their iCloud, ensuring only the individual can access the data stored.

Why the change?
The UK Government, under the Investigatory Powers Act, has demanded that Apple create a ‘back door’ to its encrypted iCloud storage for surveillance purposes and to allow them to investigate serious crime like terrorism. In response, Apple has blocked new users from accessing ADP and announced plans to disable ADP for existing users.

Impact on your data

  1. Privacy concerns: Apple must now comply with warrants to provide data on UK nationals, altering its relationship with customer information.
  2. Security risks: If Apple’s services are compromised or there’s a malicious insider, your personal and sensitive data could be more accessible.

Why this matters

  • Security and privacy: Apple’s ADP provided end-to-end encryption for iCloud data, ensuring only you could access it. The removal of ADP is seen as a step backward in making security a default.
  • Global precedent: This decision sets a precedent for accessing other applications or datasets, increasing security risks.

What you can do to protect your data

  1. Use alternative messaging services: Consider WhatsApp or Signal, which offer end-to-end encryption. Ensure messages are not included in iCloud backups by adjusting settings.
  2. For Apple users outside the UK: ADP is still available. Enable advanced encryption for iCloud.
  3. Avoid cloud storage for sensitive data: Store extremely sensitive data locally and manage your own backups.
  4. Add extra security layers: Use a VPN to encrypt data in transit, but don’t rely on it alone.
